An MPT inspection machine is the most critical, at the same time the most expensive, among the different non-destructive testing (NDT) methods, as it reveals only surface and near-surface defects in ferromagnetic materials like steel and iron.

The method is very easy to follow: the first step is to magnetize the component. This can be done by either an external magnetic field or direct electrical current. Then the application of iron particles is made either in dry form or in a liquid suspension. If there is a defect like a crack that has the same cause as inclusion, it affects the magnetic field and causes the leakage of the flux. The leakage thus created will attract and hold the particles thus giving a clear visible outline of the defect present on the surface. For the detection of the finest defects, fluorescent particles are used and examined under ultraviolet (UV-A) light.
