An Eddy Current Testing (ECT) Machine is a modern NDT tool of high technology used for inspection of conductors in and around the surface for defects that do not require physical contact. It is based on the principle of electromagnetic induction and thus it is fast, accurate, and extremely efficient.

At the system’s heart lies a probe made up of one or more coils. The moment the alternating current flows through the coil, a primary magnetic field is created. If this probe is moved close to the conductive test piece for example metal like aluminum, copper or steel the changing magnetic field induces circular electric currents in the material, which are called eddy currents.

The eddy current flow is influenced by the characteristics of the material through which it flows. Any defect such as a crack, corrosion, reduction in material, or a change in conductivity influences the flow of the currents, creating the disturbance. This results in a change in the secondary magnetic field, which consequently alters the coil's electrical impedance in the probe.

The advanced electronics of the machine catch and analyze the minute impedance variations, translating them into clear, interpretable signals on the screen. A technician can quickly determine the existence, position, and approximate size of a defect. Among other advantages, ECT is enjoyed for its speed, its ability to cope with thin coatings, and in-line production that is unbroken by inspecting the finished product, thus it has a wide application in the aerospace, automotive, and tubing manufacture industries among others where quality and safety are guaranteed at no cost to the part.
