Starting with 330 beds, it has grown into Nigeria's largest teaching hospital with over 761–800 beds, partnering with the College of Medicine, University of Lagos.

Establishment: Formally established by the LUTH Act of 1961 to train at least 100 doctors annually.
Expansion: The hospital expanded from 330 beds to 761-800 beds, serving as a premier center for specialized care including neuro-surgery, radiotherapy, and dentistry.)
