Mater Misericordia Specialist Hospital, School of Nursing and Midwifery, Afikpo.

This was one of the first and fine nursing school established in Nigeria by the Irish missionaries (Saint Patrick's missionaries) and Dr. Akanu Ibiam in 1946 during the war as a way to solve the medical needs of the community.

It is a hospital owned and managed by the Catholic diocese of Abakaliki. The hospital has accredited schools of nursing and midwifery to her credits as way to educate those who want to be professional nurses and midwives.

It has a very large compound that houses the Nursing school, mortuary and Hospital. Mater hospital is big and well fenced with all the facilities needed within the compound.
